President's Update 1-29-20

By John Holmquist
President, The Landings Association
I received an email from a resident who was concerned about reckless cart driving on our community paths. He said community path safety should be a priority. It is. He also said The Landings Association should “get on it.” We have. Last year, I was TLA’s Board Liaison to the Security Committee, and I also served as a member of the subcommittee on community path safety. The subcommittee met with residents, met with the Chatham county police chief, and reviewed the universe of possible solutions. The widening of the path between Tidewater and Wiley Bottom was one step. While the subcommittee made a number of recommendations to address the problem, there was the recognition that there had always been one solution -- the best and most cost-effective solution -- driver/user personal responsibility. We can widen the paths and have more enforcement, but these won’t solve the problem completely. I don’t mean to preach, but come on; we can solve this. Personal responsibility means you do not let unlicensed drivers drive golf carts. You share the path with walkers and bikers, and don’t force them off. You give yourself enough time to get where you are going safely, for you and others. If you are using earphones, be aware of what is going on around you. Share the path. End of sermon. We can do this. To the vast majority of the community who are courteous and responsible, thank you. On another subject, beginning in February, there will be a Working Neighbors’ Drop-in at TLA’s offices from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month beginning in February (see schedule below). Please watch for Landings Association email reminders regarding the monthly sessions. There will be at least one member of the Board present. There is no agenda; just an opportunity to talk.
