Winter Weather Headed Our Way This Weekend
Extremely cold temperatures are headed our way this weekend. Below are a few things you need to know as you prepare.
CEMA Winter Weather Update
Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) shared at its weather briefing this morning (January 30) that snow is in the forecast for our area tomorrow (January 31), starting in the afternoon and lasting for approximately eight hours. Unlike the snow event of 2025, this will be, what CEMA referred to as “light and dry snow”. No freezing rain is expected. However, everyone should be aware of icy conditions on bridges and plan accordingly.
Currently Chatham County is under a Winter Weather Watch through Sunday afternoon (February 1), with extremely cold temperatures dipping into the single digits and the likelihood of up to one inch of snow in some areas. TLA Winter Storm Prep
To prepare for the anticipated freezing temperatures and snowfall this weekend, The Landings Association’s Public Works team has strategically placed sand at the Main and North gates, as well as at TLA’s Administration Building (600 Landings Way). This approach enables crews to efficiently access the materials and promptly address any related concerns. Additionally, BrightView has supplied the Association with an ice melt product for use if needed.
It's still too soon to know how our area will be affected, but TLA’s Leadership Team is closely watching the weather. If it's unsafe for non-essential staff to arrive by 8 a.m. on Monday (February 2), opening of TLA’s Administration Building may be delayed. Watch for Landings Association emails for updates as more information becomes available.
Preparing for Winter Weather
As you are preparing for the upcoming winter storm, Utilities, Inc. of Georgia offers these tips to protect your home and indoor plumbing.
- Insulate Your Pipes - One of the most effective ways to protect your pipes from freezing is to insulate them. Insulation materials, such as foam sleeves or towels, can be wrapped around exposed pipes in your basement, crawl spaces, or attics.
- Let Faucets Drip - On extremely cold nights, allow your faucets to drip slowly to keep water moving through the pipes. If you know the faucet furthest away from your water meter, run that one. Don't waste a drop - collect this water in a container and use it to water indoor plants.
- Keep the Heat On - If you are away from home, it's important to maintain a consistent indoor temperature to prevent your pipes from freezing. Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night. Leave cabinet doors open to allow the heated air from the rest of your house to circulate the pipes. Note: Do not leave electric space heaters unattended.
General Information
- Move potted plants indoors or into a garage.
- Cover outdoor plants to retain heat. As many tropical plants can be negatively impacted by frost/freezing temperatures, it is recommended to cover them before sunset using breathable materials like frost cloth, blankets, or burlap, ensuring the fabric reaches the ground to trap soil heat. For maximum protection, use stakes to prevent the cover from touching leaves.
