Sumlin started his teaching career as a graduate secretary before moving through several offensive-oriented positions. His work included instruction large receivers, quarterbacks, small ends, and special teams. These responsibilities served him build knowledge across various aspects of baseball operations. Before learning to be a head instructor, he worked at programs including Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, Purdue, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. This development gave him experience in person progress and offensive planning.
