On the Security Scene

Please note that a brief synopsis is provided for pertinent incidents that Security responds to during the previous week. All incidents are not covered in the weekly recap. Statistics for incident reports are provided below.

This week’s most notable security concern was a juvenile-related incident with an eBike.

Juvenile-Related Incident

On Thursday, February 5, Landings Security received a report about a juvenile riding unsafely on an eBike down Landings Way North on Tuesday, February 3. The complainant advised that he had spoken with the juvenile about the behavior but also wanted to report it to Security. Contact was made with the juvenile’s father, who stated that he would speak with his son about safely riding the eBike. Security also informed the father, who was appreciative of our call, about our rules regarding eBikes.

BOLO – Pine Straw Scams

Spring is just around the corner, and many residents already may be tidying up their yards. With the season comes an uptick in pine straw vendors and pine straw scams. Pine straw scams have been around for years, and while we have not had any reports so far this year, we want to keep it that way by getting ahead of the game. Here’s how the scam typically works:

  • A crew of two-to-four men gains access to the neighborhood for a single job.
  • They drive around offering pine straw installation at a seemingly low rate per bale.
  • Once the homeowner agrees and the job is done, the final bill is often double or triple the quoted price.
  • If the homeowner objects, the workers become confrontational, pressuring them into paying.
  • Most homeowners end up paying more than expected to avoid conflict.

Below are some tips to help protect yourself from falling victim to one of these scams:

  • Hire reputable landscaping companies with references. Business cards alone don’t guarantee legitimacy.
  • Always get a written estimate before work begins and never pay upfront.
  • Insist that any cost increases be communicated before the work proceeds.
  • Report any unsolicited door-to-door vendors immediately to Landings Security (912-598-1982, Option 2).

Extra Patrols

From February 4 to 10, Landings Security performed 111 extra patrols throughout the community in addition to their routine patrols and duties.

Traffic Safety Update

The Guardian Pro Camera has been deployed on Bartram Road near Wickersham Drive. From February 4-10, there were 24 violations. The highest recorded speed was 60 MPH.
