Post-Hurricane Helene Debris Removal Update

There still is lots of storm debris in The Landings courtesy of Hurricane Helene making some wonder if Chatham County is making any progress on cleanup. The good news is your tax dollars are at work as Chatham County Public Works continues to remove the debris in the community on our regularly scheduled pickup day (Tuesdays).

However, for the County to collect Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds, they must truck the debris off-island to a Debris Management Site (DMS), where it is dumped and sorted. Each type of debris is kept separate from one another because the end destination for each category of debris is different. This process has tacked on time to the removal process and is non-negotiable per FEMA’s guidelines.

To help keep residents in the know on its progress and where workers are collecting debris, the County posts a daily schedule of the zones crews will be working on its social media sites. To view these daily postings, please visit the Chatham County, Georgia Government Facebook Page or the County's website. Also, Bulk Trash collection has been suspended for the foreseeable future so teams can focus solely on debris removal throughout the County. If you don’t want to wait for the County to remove your storm debris, there is an alternative. The on-island chipping facility is now open to private contractors, so you have the option to have your landscaper or tree companies remove your debris rather than waiting for the County crews. Dump tickets can be purchased at the North/McWhorter Gate. Cash, check, and credit cards (Mastercard and Visa only) are accepted for purchase of the dump tickets.
