SkidaWave To Volunteers
A first impression of The Landings evokes the question: How active and vital are the residents? How involved are residents in civic activities, sports, continuing education, dining, and VOLUNTEERING? Our island has many opportunities to benefit, improve, and keep our home (AKA The Landings) thriving. We salute and thank all those who participate in helping to make our community great. Please see the list below for a glimpse into some of the organizations and people who give of their time and talents to benefit the community. It is important to note this is a partial list. There are many more wonderful volunteer organizations in The Landings.
- The Landings Association Board of Directors and Committees are made up of residents committed to our community. These individuals work hard over many hours per week/month/year to protect our special place.
- Skidaway Island First Responders provide medical emergency assistance to island residents, visitors, contractors, and anyone who needs help. In a medical emergency, these wonderful community workers are on the scene first and stay with us through our toughest times.
- Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) volunteers provide services such as transportation assistance, at-home medical equipment, caregiver relief, companionship, assistance with simple home tasks when temporarily infirmed, and occasionally preparation of meals.
- Skidaway Audubon is a nonprofit organization whose volunteers perform and support island-wide conservation projects to enhance and conserve Skidaway Island’s natural environment and resources, greatly contributing to The Landings’ Sustainable Community designation. Hundreds of resident volunteers have made our Landings one of the world’s most beautiful and conservation-minded communities, as they participate in Adopt a Garden, Bat Houses, Bird Cam, Bluebird Trail, Bottle Brigade, Sparrow Field, Swifties, Tallow Terrors, Waterwise Conservation, and more.
- Landings Garden Club is devoted to beautification, conservation, and education to promote great gardening and landscaping. We thank the members for the work on the many Container Gardens, the Pollinator Garden, Skidaway Farms Community Gardens, and the Anderson Cancer Center Serenity Garden.
- Landings Landlovers was established in 1974 to promote fellowship through social and cultural activities while working toward the continued improvement of community life in The Landings through its philanthropic efforts. Money raised through a variety of fundraising activities, including the huge Flea Market and Tour of Homes, is distributed via grants, scholarships, and service awards. And, of course, there’s the Causeway Cleanup crew.
- Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), Skidaway Chapter is made up of volunteers who work closely with The Landings Association’s Public Works Department to scientifically manage and continually improve the bass, crappie, and bluegill fisheries in the 70+ freshwater lagoons, while also providing education opportunities to improve the fishing experience in all of our lagoons, via seminars, fishing clinics, and contests.
- The Village Library is run by approximately 90 volunteers who each donate from 25 to more than 100 hours of their time each year to keep our free and community-funded library running smoothly by checking books in and out, plastic-wrapping new books, attaching barcodes, and entering them into our system. Without volunteers, the library would not exist.
Above are but a few examples of those who play such a vital role in the incredible strength and vitality of The Landings. Let’s all find a way to help, and let’s all say thank you to those who have stepped up. Here’s Your SkidaWave!
