Ask Permission and Avoid Being Charged with a Crime!

Some people live by the saying, “Ask for forgiveness not permission.” However, it is important to note that if you apply this concept to other people’s property, you could find yourself charged with a crime.  

Recently, there have been some incidents in The Landings involving golf carts being taken for what appears to be a quick joyride and then left in a different location. Did you know that “borrowing” a golf cart without the owner’s permission is considered auto theft? Not only is this offense punishable by law, but you also may be fined $250 by The Landings Association for unlawful conduct. 

As you may recall, during the Club Car Championship, two individuals were arrested for taking a golf cart for a joyride. They were subsequently charged with auto theft. Please remind your children and grandchildren that “borrowing” a golf cart without the owner’s permission is a serious offense. As always, all suspects are innocent until proven otherwise. Golf cart owners who experience such incidents are encouraged to file a report with Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) as well as TLA’s Security Department (912-598-1982, Option 2).

Some golf carts are equipped with a universal key, which means a specific key is not required to operate the cart. To see if your cart has one, please contact an authorized dealer. If your cart is equipped with a universal key, we recommend installing a new ignition equipped with a specific key for your cart. Additionally, we highly recommend not leaving your keys and valuables, such as cell phones, GPS units, etc., in your carts.
