Security Update

In our February 10, 2023, On the Security Scene weekly email, we included the below notification.

USPS Mail Drop Box

On February 3, Landing Security was notified of a possible theft from a United State Postal Service (USPS) drop box. A resident used the USPS drop box located near Publix in The Village to mail a check more than a month ago and became concerned when he noticed it hadn’t been cashed. Upon contacting the intended recipient, he was informed they never received the check. Another previous suspicious incident occurred when an alert bank teller called him regarding a suspicious check being cashed with his name, address, and signature. The local Post Master has been made aware of this and other similar incidents of mail theft/fraud and is actively investigating.

Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) also reported increased incidents of mail being stolen from USPS drop boxes throughout their jurisdiction. Residents are encouraged to drop mail off at a local Post Office. The nearest location to The Landings is 1348 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.

We continue to receive similar reports, with one as recent as October 17, regarding mail that has gone missing from USPS drop boxes not only located on the island, but throughout the country.  A local Secret Service agent confirmed one case involved a male postal worker who had been befriended by a female acquaintance who subsequently illegally obtained copies of keys to USPS drop boxes. Online bill payment is always an option, and residents must routinely and frequently check their accounts for fraud or suspicious activity. Suspicious incidents should be immediately reported to your financial institution, the local police (Chatham County Police 912-652-6500), and the local Postal Inspector.

911 Dispatch Center Transition

As previously reported, Chatham County 911 Dispatch has taken over dispatching Chatham Emergency Services, and we are diligently continuing our efforts to work with County officials on receiving notifications of medical emergencies in our community at a minimum, and preferably islandwide calls for assistance. Once notified, TLA staff at the Main Gate are then testing a Mass Notification System to alert Skidaway Island First Responders and continuing to stage for escorting Chatham Emergency Service ambulances into the community.

As promised, we just deployed the radar trailer equipped with a license plate recognition camera. Please slow down and comply with our posted speed limit of 30 mph, unless posted otherwise.

 Stay safe, and stay well,
