Hurricane Idalia

Landings Security entered OPCON 2, securing assets and finalizing plans, on Tuesday and Wednesday morning to prepare for Hurricane Idalia’s arrival. Our area expects heavy rains, up to three to four inches in some areas, and sustained winds up to 60 – 70 MPH according to Chatham Emergency Management Agency. There also is the potential for localized flooding, power outages, and isolated tornadoes.

On Wednesday (August 30), Hurricane Idalia made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida as a Category 3 hurricane. Fortunately, Skidaway Island experienced approximately 55 MPH sustained winds and gusts up to 66 MPH. Landings Security remained at normal staffing levels during and after the storm, and vendors were restricted from entering the community after 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Security staff coordinated efforts with Public Works for tree removal, and all streets were clear and fully operational in short order. Chatham Emergency Services and Skidaway Island FirstResponders did not have to respond to any emergencies within the community during the storm. Vendors were authorized to enter the community at 7 a.m. on Thursday to assist residents with cleanup.

A few homes and The Landings Company suffered structural damages due to fallen trees, and The Landings Marina reported damage to a few sailboats and private boats in a dry storage rack that was damaged due to the wind.

Vendor Disturbance

On August 23, Landings Security received a call from a resident regarding loud music playing. Upon arrival, the Officer noticed that the individual was a vendor and not a resident. The individual was in a personal vehicle and did not have a visitors pass or a Commercial RFID. The Landings requires all vendors have either a Day Pass or Commercial RFID to enter the community. Security informed the vendor that loud music is not permitted in The Landings and reminded him to adhere to protocols surrounding entry for outside vendors.
