Chatham County Police (CCPD) requests SWAT

This message is posted on behalf of CCPD. As a reminder, any inquiries regarding police activity in The Landings should be made directly to the responding agency.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on 12/31/22, CCPD was called to an address at The Landings for a report of an elderly dementia patient who was acting very confused about their surroundings, had a firearm, and was refusing to let another person inside the residence leave.

CCPD requested the assistance of the Chatham County SWAT Team. Negotiators who are part of the SWAT Team convinced the elderly dementia patient to leave the home peacefully. There were no injuries to anyone involved in the incident, and the dementia patient was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Golf Cart/Pedestrian Accident

On January 3, Landings Security, Chatham Emergency Services (CES) and CCPD responded to a golf cart versus pedestrian incident in the area of Landings Way South and Buckhorn Lane. The driver and pedestrian were related. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Although the exact cause of the incident has not been determined, the golf cart’s brakes were not fully functional after the incident.

Vandalism

On December 22, Landings Security discovered property damage to Landings Community Park’s men’s restroom. The door had been torn off the hinges, and the paper towel dispenser was missing. Video footage of the area was reviewed for possible suspects.

On December 22, Landings Security received report of a vehicle being egged at the Community Park. The victim knew the suspect, who was identified as a guest of a Landings resident. The sponsoring resident was contacted and reminded they are ultimately responsible for their guest’s actions.

Traffic Safety

Landings Security was contacted regarding a resident walking along roadways in the community and stepping in front of vehicles. Security previously spoke with this particular resident about her unsafe and illegal habits. Residents are encouraged to practice extreme caution when approaching pedestrians and to contact CCPD immediately if illegal activities are observed, and then to notify Landings Security.

Suspicious Incident

On December 31, Landings Security responded to a suspicious person walking through the Deer Creek Village gate wearing pajamas. The person was identified as a resident’s guest who had become disoriented and lost. The guest was escorted back to the sponsoring resident’s home.

On December 29, Landings Security received a telephone call from a resident stating a vehicle was following him and he was concerned for his safety. The driver, Mr. C, was instructed to proceed to the Main Gate. During the Officer’s interview of the other driver, later identified as Mr. H, he thought the complainant was not a resident and he had tailgated him through the gate. After the complainant’s vehicle entered the gate, he (Mr. H) pulled over to allow Mr. C to pass him, and then started to follow him. Mr. H was advised on proper protocols for possible tailgaters. Both parties are current Landings residents in good standing.

On December 27, Landings Security received video footage from a resident of a person walking close to their fence line off Green Island Road at approximately 3:30 a.m. On another occasion, the same resident reported on or about November 30 he contacted Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) for what appeared to be gun shots being fired at approximately 3:00 a.m. Upon responding, CCPD obtained video footage of a truck failing to stop at the four-way (Green Island Road and Diamond Causeway) and traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver eluded police when they turned into South Harbor. Landings Security assisted CCPD and identified the vehicle’s owner. The case is still open with CCPD.

On December 24, Security personnel responded to the area of Magnolia Crossing for a suspicious, white vehicle with its lights off. A search of the area was conducted, but no vehicles matching the description were located. No other reports were received.

On December 23, Landings Security responded to what appeared to be juveniles throwing pumpkins off the Westcross bridge. Upon their arrival, no suspects could be located, but pumpkin pieces were noticed on the roadway under the bridge. Extra patrols were conducted in the area, and no further incidents were observed or reported.
