“Treasure” Map Available

It is easy to imagine Skidaway Island was nothing but a vast tropical forest before the creation of The Landings. Easy, but wrong. Just check “the map”. 
The map is the Skidaway Island Historical and Natural Sites Map published by Skidaway Audubon and Sustainable Skidaway, with financial support from Landings Landlovers. The beautifully illustrated and highly informative map details the island’s unique history and treasured features.
Shell middens on the island along with archeological evidence indicates humans hunted and fished here anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 years ago. In the 1700s, outposts were staffed on Skidaway as well as Tybee Island and Thunderbolt to guard against Spanish invaders who occupied Florida. During the Civil War, the 4th Georgia Battalion was posted on the island.
In 1878, a Benedictine monastery and school were established but were destroyed by fire in 1889. During Prohibition, Skidaway was a popular place among bootleggers for making whiskey. In 1934, Robert Roebling, grandson of the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, bought an 800-acre tract that was eventually sold to the state for creation of the UGA Oceanographic Research Center.
Many other treasured features of Skidaway are highlighted on the map, and the reverse side includes 25 neighboring off-island places to visit and historic sites. The maps are $10 each and are available at The Landings Association office (600 Landings Way South) and the Skidaway Island State Park gift shop. A limited number of flat, not folded maps, measuring 18 X 27 inches, suitable for framing, are available upon request, perfect for the history buff on your holiday shopping list. It’s a great way to get oriented and become informed about this special place we call home,” said Welch, one of many volunteers with Sustainable Skidaway, the group responsible for The Landings being certified as Georgia’s first Sustainable Community by Audubon International. The designation is awarded to communities that meet criteria in 15 categories designed to merge economic and social considerations with environmental protection and enhancement.
