Landings Landlovers Scholarships Awarded The Landlovers Foundation’s scholarship fund is designed to assist The Landings Association’s and The Landings Company’s employees and their immediate dependent family members with expenses for post-high-school education. Returning Scholarship Recipients  Hannah Henderson - Hannah currently is a fourth year Pharm. D. (graduate school) student at the University of Georgia’s College of Pharmacy, graduating in May 2022. Her goal is to work in a  community pharmacy because she feels that community pharmacists have the best opportunity to work with area residents to help them understand their healthcare needs. A student with consistant outstanding grades, Hannah maintains a 3.62 GPA, is a Dean’s List student, and participates in a variety of honorary and volunteer organizations. The daughter of The Landings Association’s Controller Jessica Henderson, Hannah stated in this year’s Landlovers scholarship application that “This scholarship has provided me a means to further my education the past two years. I cannot express my appreciation for this committee and the generosity you all have shown me helping me obtain my degree.” Donovan Lewis, Jr. - Donovan is a fourth-time Landlovers scholarship applicant, completing his junior year at Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont, majoring in Business Administration. A member of the Norwich varsity basketball team since his freshman year, he has been an asset to the team and named team MVP. Maintaining a 3.8 GPA while practicing and travelling with the team, Donovan is preparing to own a computer technology company, if he isn’t recruited by the NBA or to play basketball overseas after graduation. Donovan’s mom is the Association’s Communications Manager Lynn Lewis, a 22-year employee. Hunter McDowell - Hunter has just completed his undergraduate studies at Mercer University with a degree in Biology/Pre-Pharmacy. The first in his family to attend college, his ultimate goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and be able to study in a path that can help everyone within his community. In this year’s scholarship application (his fifth consecutive), Hunter states, “The Landlovers’ Scholarship provides the financial needs of my education to be met, and I hope my contribution in the future can somehow repay it.” Hunter, who will enter the Pharm. D. program at the University of Georgia in the fall, is the son of Landings Association Community Development Representative Sabrina McDowell, a 24-year employee. Alexis Rooks - Alexis is another five-time Landlovers scholarship applicant and was supported by Landlovers throughout her undergraduate studies at Clark Atlanta University, from which she graduated in 2015. She is now enrolled in the MBA program at Georgia Southern University, where she has earned a 3.57 GPA, with the ultimate goals of earning her Ph.D., operating a successful business, and then using her degree and experience to teach at the university level. The daughter of 15-year Public Works Department employee Carzell Brooks, we are very happy to see Alexis again this year and learn of her progress. First-Time Landlovers Scholarship Recipients Charles Buchan - Charles is a 2018 graduate of the University of Florida, with a degree in Geology. He currently is an Environmental Specialist with the Association’s Public Works Department. Charlies will enroll in the Harvard Extension School program to obtain a Graduate Certificate in Natural Resource Management. His goal is to learn the skills to develop his life’s second career with course work in Watershed Maintenance, Sustainable Cities, GIS, and Supply Chain Assessment. He intends to apply these skills to his current job, volunteer opportunities, and eventually his own environmental consulting firm. Cheyenne Buchan - Cheyenne is the daughter of Environmental Specialist Charles Buchan and is a recent graduate of the University of South Florida in Tampa, with a BS Degree in Biomedical Science. (Hers was the first-ever Zoom interview conducted by the Landlovers Scholarship Committee.) She is planning to enter the graduate Pharm. D program at Nova Southeastern University to prepare for a position working in a community-based retail or hospital pharmacy. She says, “I am delighted that I will be given the opportunity to study in a field I am truly passionate about and interested in, that will allow me to help others each and every day.” Darian Braddy - Darian currently is serving an internship with the DNR but has worked as a Dockhand at the Landings Harbor and Delegal Creek Marinas. Her goals and ambitions are inspiring and multifaceted. A Dean’s  and President’s list student, she is on track to complete a Marine Sciences degree from Savannah State University later this year. Darian also plans to obtain a Master’s Degree in aquaculture or coral reef rehabilitation and conservation. She will dedicate her scholarship money to advancing her SCUBA certifications that are necessary for the programs she is pursuing in the marine sciences track. In her application, Darian states that she hopes that all “are inspired by my motivation and that we can work together to help current and future generations thrive.” Landings Landlovers Community Service Award Granted  The Landlovers Community Service Merit Award was the idea of Louise Rutland, a Landings Landlovers member and the mother of two girls, who wanted children who live in The Landings and are good role models, to be recognized and honored for their accomplishments. To that end, in 2013, she proposed that Landlovers recognize and award high school seniors for their community service participation. First called the Community Service Scholarship, the name was changed in 2005 to The Community Service Merit Award. The award recognizes students who go “above and beyond” in devoting their time and talent to community service activities and causes. Commitment, creativity, leadership, and total time dedicated are all taken into consideration in determining the winners. To qualify, students must be Landings residents, be in their last year of high school with graduation anticipated this year, and plan to attend an institution of higher education full time next fall. The 2021 Community Service Merit Award recipient is  Graham Glass, a remarkably creative and dedicated young man who has committed himself to service in his school and community. A 2021 graduate of the Savannah Arts Academy, Graham currently is the Co-President and Head Recruiter for UTime Savannah, a volunteer group of high schoolers who care for differently abled children while their parents get a break. He also participated in a Rein Community Service program, working for a month with orphanages and animal reservations in Thailand. He has been a Savannah Arts Academy Student Ambassador and an Alee Shriners Haunted House Actor, in addition to playing on the school tennis team, working as a retail keyholder for the Copper Closet, a pedicab driver, an intern with Montage Cinemas, an actor with the Savannah Arts Academy Theatre, and a Landings Club pool concierge. Graduating with a cumulative average of 97.3, Graham will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara, majoring in Communications.
