TLA’s Wildlife Program and Animal Trapping on Residential Property

In 1994, The Landings Association created a wildlife management program where the U.S. Department of Agriculture (APHIS) provided one ¾ time Wildlife Biologist to remove and manage state and federally protected species such as deer, feral hogs, vultures, and numerous species of migratory birds.

Since the program’s inception 24 years ago, the USDA Wildlife Biologist has removed an annual average of 115 deer and 70 other offending species from The Landings Association’s property.

Over the last several years, an increasing number of residents have called  the Public Works Department to share their concerns with raccoons and armadillos frequenting their private properties. These issues are largely due to the existence of bird feeders and other similar structures near and around dwellings, trash receptacle lids being exposed, and food items being discarded on the ground. In the past, TLA’s USDA Wildlife Biologist assisted residents with the control of racoons and armadillos located on private property. However, trapping services on private property is not funded through TLA’s service agreement with the USDA. It is important to note that our USDA Wildlife Biologist is contracted to control the deer and feral hogs on the island. We do not have a trapping program for properties not owned by the Association. The Wildlife Biologist’s role in these types of situations is to provide technical advice for private property owners. Any trapping of raccoons, armadillos, squirrels, etc., should be handled through private companies such as Critter Control, Yates Astro, or other pest control companies.
