Professional golfers are hitting the links March 28-31 at Deer Creek Golf Course for the Savannah Golf Championship. The tournament will have a military appreciation day Saturday.
The day will also include a closing ceremony featuring Dana Bowman, flyovers, and a musical act, said 1st Lt. Alixandria Elzie, the 3rd Infantry Division community relations officer and lead liasion with the PGA for this event.
“I would encourage all Soldiers and their families to attend if possible throughout the week, and definitely make time to come out on Saturday,” Elzie said. “Admission, food, and beverages are free to all DOD ID Cardholders to include their families.”
Military vehicle static displays will also be on-site for both golfers and spectators to see up close.
The 3rd ID’s 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team is providing several vehicles for display. They include an M1 Abrams main battle tank, an M2A3 Bradley fighting vehicle, an M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzer, an M1135 Stryker nuclear, biological, chemical reconnaissance vehicle, and a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle—the Army’s newest vehicle, said Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Murray, the brigade’s community outreach noncommissioned officer in charge.
Additionally, the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade will have helicopters on display. The 3rd ID’s mascot, Rocky, will also make an appearance, Elzie said.
“You may spot him at the driving range, at the putting green, or perfecting his golf clap while watching the tournament,” she said.
Supporting the event is important to maintain community relations, said Murray.
“We like to show support for a wonderful community that we live beside and interact with on a personal basis every day,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to introduce our host city to our ‘duty day’ operations.”
