SIBC Puts Spin on Old Tradition
The Skidaway Island Boating Club (SIBC) will observe an old boating tradition known as the Annual Burning of the Socks on March 7 at Landing Harbor Marina at 5 p.m.
In a merry ceremony around the outdoor fireplace, worn-out winter socks are burned to celebrate the end of winter and the start of the boating season, even though boating is year-round on the island. SIBC put a good-hearted spin on this old tradition by asking attendees to bring a package of new, white athletic socks to be donated to Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless.
Homeless Authority Executive Director Cindy Kelley will be on hand to accept the socks and talk about the authority’s innovative project to help homeless veterans, a sorely needed undertaking being championed by SIBC.
Free chili (vegetarian and beef) courtesy of The Marshes, will be available at the 5 p.m. BYOB event, so attendees must RSVP to siboatingclub@gmail.com by March 2. Â Attendees may bring a $10 cash contribution in lieu of new, white athletic socks for donation.
