First Responders Update

I start by thanking Linda Brownlee for all her efforts this year with the Mahjong tournament. Each year, this amazing group raises money for the Skidaway Island First Responders. We always are so humbled by the outpouring of love shown to us. WE could not do what we do without community support and donations.

We are seeing a great deal of people on the island still allowing their underaged children/grandchildren to either drive a golf cart or sit in the lap of someone who is driving. I am not sure how many accidents and possible fatalities it is going to take to express the dangers that come along with allowing this behavior to continue. What are you waiting for? Please heed my advice and simply stop doing this. If someone warned me that I was doing something that was continually putting my child in harm’s way, I would only need to hear it once. Please don’t let your loved one be the collateral damage.

As we approach the holidays and all that comes with that, we will see an uptick in drinking and driving. On the same lines as the golf cart advice, DO NOT DO IT! Whether you or on a golf cart, in a vehicle, or on a boat, alcohol and driving do not pair well together. IF you are hosting a party or working or eating at one of the clubhouses and see anyone over served and attempting to drive, say something and do something. Again, this should not even be a conversation at this point.

Lately, we have been receiving the same question repeatedly. “Who should we call from an emergency?” Simple answer: 911

We have sent out newsletter articles, posted this in magazines, and posted it on the digital signs near the exits. For all police, fire, and medical emergencies, call 911. We want to retrain all your brains because it is at your worst time when you need to know this information. On those same lines, please fill out the yellow medical cards with all pertinent information. The Landings Association (TLA) has the cards in their main office (600 Landings Way), and all you need to do is complete them and put them in a bag inside the right-side door of your refrigerator.

Lastly, please remember to have a complete list of all medications taken by you and all family members who live with you. Handing us a pill box with random medication in it does not help you or us. Time is of the essence, and anything of importance should be updated and written down accordingly. As we approach this time of year, our calls increase. There will be many times two calls will drop simultaneously. If Skidaway Island First Responders shows up without a paid professional, we will need as much help from you/family/neighbor that we can get. Having that information accessible is a HUGE help.
