Tropical Storm Debby Update (August 6 @ 11:05 a.m.)

Tue, 08/06/2024

Tropical Storm Debby remains in our area, moving northeast at 7 MPH.

Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) shared at its 9 a.m. briefing that some locations in Savannah, including the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, have reported rainfall more than eight inches since the beginning of this weather event. As the storm continues moving in a counterclockwise motion, it could bring even more rain into our area.

The tornado threat with this storm has diminished, and Chatham County has reportedly seen the worst of the winds. However, with the heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Debby, there could be instances of downed trees and the possibility of power outages throughout the County.

TLA Update

Public Works and Landings Security continue evaluating all areas of the island, including monitoring lagoon levels, removing downed trees, and cleaning up debris. Landings Security remains open 24/7 and has officers on call if needed. Public Works is working extended hours throughout this weather event, and also has staff on call.

At the time of this email, Public Works crews have removed three trees on the island that were blocking roadways and continue addressing issues of backed-up stormwater inlets to help prevent flooding. All the lagoon valves around the island remain open, and the lagoons are draining into the marsh. It is important to note that despite these efforts, there still could be flooding in some areas in The Landings due to high tide and the amount of rainfall. As a reminder, TLA’s Administration Building (600 Landings Way) is closed to foot traffic today (August 6). We will continue to serve customers remotely. You can reach staff members directly via email and phone. If you are unsure how to reach a staff member, please email webmaster@landings.org, and we will get them the message. Weather permitting, the office will reopen tomorrow morning (Wednesday, August 7) at 8 a.m.

Landings Harbor Marina and Delegal Creek Marina also will be closed today (August 6), with plans to reopen tomorrow (Wednesday, August 7). So far, there has been no significant damage to the Marinas. At Landings Harbor Marina, the electrical lines that feed wet slip docks W1 - W9 were damaged. This dock is next to the fish cleaning shack and will require repairs. Additionally, marsh wrack washed ashore near the bait station that must be cleared away. At 12:13 a.m. this morning (August 6), Landings Harbor recorded wind gusts of 49 MPH, and at 4:27 a.m. this morning (August 6), wind gusts of 36 MPH were recorded at Delegal Creek Marina. Currently, winds are calm at both Marinas, coming in at about six miles per hour.

Chatham County Public Works has notified the Association that its team has been reduced to critical workforce, and today’s yard debris collection in The Landings will be rescheduled. The rescheduled date has not yet been determined. As an aside, some members have asked about the County’s Warning Sirens. Please click here to learn more about how the warning system works.

Please watch for more Tropical Storm Debby updates as more details become available.
