Hurricane Debby Update (August 5 @10:50 a.m.)
Hurricane Debby made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida this morning and is now classified as a Category 1 Hurricane. The storm’s current sustained winds are around 75 MPH, and it is moving north-northeast at approximately 10 MPH.
Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) shared at its 9 a.m. briefing that the storm is expected to have the greatest impact on our area starting this evening (Monday, August 5) and going into Tuesday (August 6). The tropical storm force winds for this weather event are low. We could experience wind gusts in the low 40 MPH range.
The biggest threat with Hurricane Debby to our area is rainfall. Some areas could see 10-20 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Landings residents are reminded not to place yard debris on top of, or next to, storm drain inlets to minimize the potential for clogged drains and flooding.
Currently, Chatham County is under a Tornado Watch until 4 p.m. today (August 5). CEMA is in OPCON 2 and is monitoring Hurricane Debby around the clock. Like CEMA, your Association is in OPCON 2, the preparation phase, and our Public Works, Marinas, and Security departments are working to prepare for the expected heavy rainfall.
To err on the side of caution, TLA’s Administration Building (600 Landings Way) will close to foot traffic today (August 5) at 2 p.m., through tomorrow (August 6). We will continue to serve customers remotely. You can reach staff members directly via email and phones. If you are unsure how to reach a staff member, please email webmaster@landings.org, and we will get them the message.
Landings Harbor Marina and Delegal Creek Marina also will close at 2 p.m. today (August 5), and remain closed until it is deemed safe to reopen. The Wilmington River tides are predicted to reach more than seven feet at high tide during the late evening hours over the next two days. The dock access ramps will be removed and disconnected from the shore. Limited Marina staff will remain on standby throughout the storm event.
Landings Security will remain open 24/7, and have officers on call if needed. Public Works will be working extended hours, and and also have staff on call.
