Skidaway Hamilton and Abigails October 10 Program
Please join Skidaway Hamiltons and the Abigails on October 10 at 3:30 p.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church for its October program. Faith Davis Ruffins, Curator of African American History and Culture, and Dr. Tony C. Perry, Curator of Environmental History at Smithsonian Museum, will share the special Voices from the Southern Lowcountry. As the largest museum and research complex in the world, the Smithsonian Institution holds one of the largest collections of Lowcountry artifacts outside of the region. Many of these objects have never been on display and recent visitor testing indicates that only half of national Smithsonian visitors know where the Lowcountry is located.
In a new project scheduled to culminate in 2025-26, Voices from the Southern Lowcountry will include an exhibition at the National Museum of American History in tandem with extensive public programming and community outreach efforts. The project will highlight the rich cultural legacies of the Gullah-Geechee communities and how that heritage is anchored in the environment -- connecting history with present-day issues of land access, development, loss of coastline, and other environmental changes.Upcoming programs include the progress and impact of the Hyundai EV plant in Bryan County (November 14); and Savannah’s transgender community and issues (December 19).
