Hurricane Idalia Update - August 29 @ 11:15 a.m.

Tue, 08/29/2023

At its 9 a.m. Briefing, Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) shared that Hurricane Idalia is now a Category 1 Hurricane and is located 503 miles south/southwest of Savannah.

The storm currently is traveling 14 miles per hour (MPH) and is expected to reach Category 3 status by late this evening. It is expected to increase in forward speed as it comes through our area to roughly 18 MPH.

Impacts to the Savannah area are expected around 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday (August 30). However, some areas may begin experiencing tropical storm force winds ahead of the storm. Our area can expect heavy rains, up to six inches in some areas, and sustained winds up to 44 MPH. There is the potential for localized flooding, power outages, and isolated tornadoes.

During severe weather events, The Landings Association often is asked when the bridges leading to the community will close. The Landings Association is not authorized to close bridges. Decisions for bridge closures are made by Chatham County’s Emergency Management Team, Georgia Department of Transportation, and Chatham County Police Department. However, it is important to note that Chatham Emergency Services will cease responding to all calls when sustained winds reach 39 MPH.

Currently, Landings Public Works and The Landings Marinas are prepping for the storm, including testing equipment and lagoon overflow structures, as well as securing assets.
