Memorial Day 2023 Note

By Lou Molella
Landings Military Family Relief Fund

Memorial Day has passed. However, I think it appropriate to share with both The Landings community and The Marshes the information below.

Gerry and I attended the Change of Command Ceremonies for outgoing Commander Major General Charles Constanza. Charlie is no stranger to The Landings, he spoke at Kiwanis on the Thursday before Memorial Day. He also honored us at The Marshes, with a Third infantry Division Color Guard, and a touching remembrance of Soldiers under his command who made the supreme sacrifice. With tears in his eyes, he shared with us that he carries in his wallet, a picture of each of those heroes.

At closing, I convinced him to join me in singing The Dog Face Soldier Song, which I learned at ft Benning in 1957. It is the marching battle song of our military neighbors. In case you want to sing it when you hear their band play it, at various events, the following are the words:

I wouldn’t give bean to be a fancy pants Marine.
I’d rather be a Dog faced Soldier like I am.
I wouldn’t trade my old O.D.s for all the Navy’s Dungarees!
For I’m the walking pride of Uncle Sam
I’m just a Dog Face Soldier with a-
Rifle on my Shoulder and I eat raw meat for breakfast every day.
So feed me ammunition keep the Third Division
A Dog Faced soldier is A o.k.

Twenty-two thousand men and women wear the patch of the 3rd ID and are stationed at Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart. When you add to that number wives and children, it grows substantially! These are the folks we have been committed to assist when the Landings Military Family Relief Fund (LMFRF) are called on.

The 3rd ID is one of our Army’s oldest and most decorated divisions of our Military. With participation in World War 1 (Rock of the Marne) World War 2, Korea, and (multiple Deployments to IRAQ from Savannah!)

Many members of the Army have received the MEDAL OF HONOR, but the 3rd Infantry Division boasts the most Medal of Honor recipients – 56 to be exact. OUR NEIGHBORS!!!

General Constanza in his closing remarks offered the following:

“I thank our neighbors, particularly The Landings community for their wonderful Landings Military Family Relief Fund, we appreciate your help and love.”
