CCA Saltwater Fly Fishing Clinic Sells Out to Island Anglers

When most people think about fly fishing, they imagine casting for trout in streams and rivers. In recent years, however, fly fishing has broadened its scope to include going after a wide range of saltwater species, especially in coastal waters.

The good news for island anglers is that half of our 151 lagoons host a number of saltwater species that can be caught on a fly. To take advantage of this opportunity, Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Skidaway Chapter recently sponsored its inaugural saltwater fly fishing clinic hosted by the “Fishing Doctor” Bud Robertson, along with longtime fly angler Clyde Olson.

Held on a Saturday morning at a lagoon along Peregrine Crossing, the first topic covered was the species typically found in our saltwater lagoons such as sea trout, ladyfish, and flounder as well as red drum (redfish) and black drum. An occasional small tarpon can add to the excitement!

Bud suggests that one of the best strategies for fishing our lagoons is to cast along the shoreline where fish are cruising and on the hunt for prey. When the water is clear you often can see redfish circling a lagoon close to the edge. During high spring tides, the culverts that bring water into lagoons also carry a variety of bait, and fish “stack up,” waiting for a meal coming their way. At such tides, fishing the flow from a culvert can result in exceptional results.

As far as tackle goes, Bud recommends a seven-or-eight-weight-rod with a floating line. The classic Clouser minnow in chartreuse is his suggestion for the best all-around fly, though traditional bonefish flies such as Crazy Charlies and Gotchas work well with our redfish.

Skidaway CCA fishing clinics are open to members only. You easily can join CCA by visiting ccaskidaway.org. As a member you’ll get notices of future clinics and other chapter events.
