CCA Kids’ Fishing Derby: May 27

One of Skidaway Island’s favorite and longstanding family traditions is CCA’s Kids’ Fishing Derby. The annual Derby kicks off on Saturday, May 27 at 9 a.m. at the Kids’ Fishing Lagoon (located behind the Oakridge fire station near the intersection of Westcross and Log Landing roads).

This event is free for children and grandchildren of The Landings, ages three-to-15, along with their guests. This is a fun-filled event that promotes sportsmanship, conservation, and provides a terrific community experience. Each child must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Event day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The Derby begins at 9 a.m. and finishes at 10:30 a.m. Participants are asked to register now on our website (ccaskidaway.org).

Awards in various categories and age groups will be given out at 11 a.m. In addition to numerous door prizes, there will be at least a dozen fishing prizes, along with a specific one for the first fish caught at 9:01a.m.!

Attendees should bring fishing gear, insect repellent, drinks, a hat, sunscreen, and a folding chair. Tom Rood, CCA Skidaway Board Member and head of the Kids’ Fishing Derby Committee looks forward to this year’s event.

“Each year we have well over 100 youngsters participating in this fun, themed Derby. Our surveys show that about a third of these youngsters are first-time anglers. For those rookies, we do have a limited number of complimentary rods-and-reels to hand out, as well as plenty of bait for everyone. We also will have approximately 40 CCA Skidaway Chapter Volunteers on hand to help newcomers get started,” he said.

CCA will provide a complimentary CCA Youth Membership to each family that registers. Young anglers will benefit from the fishing and conservation stories contained in the award-winning magazine, Rising Tide, published quarterly by CCA National.
