Beware of Pine Straw Scammers in Community
The Landings Association has received several reports over the last few days of pine straw scammers in the community. With this scam, individuals offer residents one price and a specific number of bails to be used. Upon completion, they claim they needed more pine straw than originally quoted and significantly increase the price. Other victims stated the scammers claim to run out of pine straw and leave an unfinished job stating they will return with more pine straw. Then the scammers immediately cash the check at a local bank and do not return to complete the job.Â
Landings Security is working to connect with the alleged scammers. It is suspected the individuals tailgated into the community. Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) has been contacted and requested to look into these incidents.Â
Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to avoid falling prey to pine straw scams.
- Use a reputable landscape company with references. Remember, anyone can order business cards online and appear to be a legitimate company.
- Get a written estimate before any work begins. Never pay anything upfront, and be extremely leery of any claims for a higher agreed upon amount.Â
- Make sure the contractor knows to inform you immediately if there will be an increase in cost.
- Contact Landings Security immediately regarding any unsolicited door-to-door salespeople (912-598-1982, Option 3).
