CCA Skidaway’s February meeting and seminar on February 20 will feature Shawn Crampes, Army veteran and member of NOAA’s Cooperative Shark Tagging Program. The seminar begins at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (3 West Ridge Road).

Shawn joined the Cooperative Shark Tagging Program in 2016. This program is a collaboration between recreational anglers, the commercial fishing industry, and NOAA Fisheries to understand sharks in the Atlantic Ocean. As apex predators, sharks play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining the species below them in the food chain and serving as an indicator for ocean health. They help remove the weak and the sick as well as keep the balance with competitors, helping to ensure species diversity. Shark tagging allows researchers to obtain valuable data regarding their natural behavior. These observations significantly improve our understanding of the ecosystem’s function and dynamics.

Shawn, a Georgia native, moved to the Savannah area when he joined the military, stationed at Fort Hood and Fort Stewart. He did two deployments in Iraq and nine months in Afghanistan. He served 17 years in the Military and, upon retirement, decided to stay active in the Reserves. He is a supervisor for Carefree Boat Club, a field technician with Osprey Initiative, and he does volunteer work for Ogeechee Riverkeepers. Shawn plans to further his education at Savannah State University in the Marine Biology program.

CCA’s February raffle prize is an inshore saltwater rod-and-reel from River Supply in Thunderbolt valued at $150.
