Big Plant Sale April 9-10

We have some good news for gardeners! Thousands of plants that were to be sold at the end of April as part of Skidaway Audubon’s big plant sale/fundraiser have been delivered early! Consequently, Audubon is having a pop-up plant sale on April 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Skidaway Farms.

“This is like having the finest pollinator plants in the region, including native, hard-to-find plants, come right to our island for you to select, take home, and get an early start on your spring planting,” said Audubon President Dawn Cordo. “We carefully sourced new suppliers this year because this is a major fundraiser for us, and our success depends greatly on the support of the community.”

This is Skidaway Audubon’s second annual sale of pollinator plants, blooming plants that attract pollinators such as butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other insects critical to the survival of flowering trees, plants, and food crops. There are dozens of varieties available at prices ranging from $5 to $17. Checks and credit cards are accepted. Among the plants available at the pop-up sale are lantana, jasmine, bush daisy, beeblossom, plumbago, pincushion, salvia, and sedum.

Gardeners looking for milkweed, foxglove, turtlehead, and herbs can order those online at skidawayaudubon.org until April 20. Skidaway Audubon will receive these plants from the supplier later this month. Pickup of these plants will be at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We owe a big thanks to ‘Farmer Jane’ Kollmann and Skidaway Farms for making the farm available for the plant sale this weekend and providing a place where the plants can be safely held with the benefit of sprinklers and electrified fencing,” said Cordo.

Skidaway Farms is located on McWhorter Drive, about two miles north of The Landings’ main entrance. After turning left into the farm, bear right, and drive to the extreme far end of the farm. For questions or more information, email cordodawn@gmail.com.
