Anniversary: Palmetto Section of The Landings

By 50th Anniversary History and Communications subcommittees

When Skidaway Island was first being plotted, Skidaway Island Plantation, the section now known as Palmetto, was not part of the property owned by Union Camp Corporation and its subsidiary, community developer, The Branigar Organization. It was owned by a competitive developer from Atlanta who went bankrupt during the 1973 recession. Union Camp purchased the property out of receivership; and, following a near-unanimous property owner vote, it was added to The Landings in October of 1979. Property Owners and sales prospects alike were introduced to this new section in February of 1980 at a community-wide Grand Opening Celebration hosted by Branigar in Tidewater Square.
