Weekly Update for 9.26.21
Pfizer Boosters Shots Available Monday

Beginning Monday, Sept. 27, the Coastal Health District will offer booster shots of Pfizer vaccine to eligible individuals.

This week the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved booster shots for the following individuals who received Pfizer vaccine more than six months ago:

  • Individuals age 65 and older,
  • Residents in long-term care settings,
  • Individuals age 18 and older with certain underlying medical conditions, and
  • Individuals age 18 and older who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure because of where they work or live.

COVID-19 vaccines are still working very well to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death, even against the more contagious Delta variant.

However, public health experts are starting to see the protection decrease over time. A booster shot is meant to increase that protection in people who are at high risk of complications from COVID-19 because of age or health, or people who are at high risk of exposure to the virus.

These decisions by the FDA and CDC do not apply to individuals who received Moderna vaccine or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Data from booster trials involving these vaccines will be evaluated in the coming weeks and additional recommendations could be issued.

Please note: not every health department has Pfizer vaccine available. The following locations do offer Pfizer vaccine by appointment, and can give booster doses to eligible individuals:

  • Chatham Co. Health Dept. main clinic – 1395 Eisenhower Dr.
  • Chatham Co. Health Dept. Annex (former EmployAbility building) - 1249 Eisenhower Dr.
  • West Chatham Site @ Gulfstream - 171 Crossroads Parkway, Savannah
  • Savannah Fire Station #3 - 121 East Oglethorpe Ave., Savannah
  • Glynn Co. Health Department - 2747 Fourth St., Brunswick
  • Effingham Co. Health Department - 802 Hwy. 119 South, Springfield
  • Liberty Co. Health Dept. - 1113 East Oglethorpe Hwy., Hinesville

Dates and hours vary at each location, so please visit chdcovidvax.org for more details and to schedule an appointment. For assistance, you may also call our COVID-19 Vaccination Phone Bank at 912-230-5506. The phone bank is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Your vaccine story

"Being immune compromised with Multiple Sclerosis and working a full time job is demanding and scary being around the public. I contracted Covid-19 in late December and had a hard time with the illness. It took a month for me to recover from Covid and I still suffer from the effects of the disease today. I chose to get the vaccine even after testing positive several months consistently with the antibodies because of the Delta variant and my community. I never want to encounter this horrible disease that has taken so many lives and made my family worried and my life stop. Knowing that I already fought an illness, another illness was not on my time table. I am not an individual that wants to stay down. I want to do my part to help end this pandemic and keep this pandemic far away from anyone. It was terrifying to get my first shot, but I was completely fine. All the horror stories I have seen and heard simply weren’t true for me. I had nothing at injection and felt slightly under the weather for a few days. I’ll sacrifice a few days to breathe easier. All the variants of this virus may still happen and I need all the added protection I can get. I am eager and grateful to be able to get my second dose of the vaccine soon. I plan on getting the booster after, as a compromised individual. I feel protected, responsible and helpful to stomp out this virus. I hope others will too!"
