Mother’s Day was made an official US holiday in 1914, but there are accounts of celebrating mothers as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans who held entire festivals to honor their mother goddesses. More recently, there are several traditions and initiatives that have merged to create the modern Mother’s Day celebrations we know, including Mothering Sunday from the United Kingdom, Mothers’ Friendship Day, and Mother’s Peace Day post-Civil War.
