Security Update 

At this time last year, I wrote about the Web.com Tour (now known as the Korn Ferry Tournament) and what a huge success it was, especially the Military Appreciation Day. Unfortunately, not only was the event canceled this year, but we also are facing the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. 

As people around the world struggle to deal with the deadly virus in varying facets of their lives, from economic uncertainty to death, I remain thankful for many things. I am most grateful for the people I have the privilege to know and serve. Challenging times bring out the best (and sometimes worst) in people, and once again, I have seen my officers and residents in The Landings rise to the occasion. Even with reduced staffing levels due to high-risk employees self-isolating, my team continued to be a daily dose of inspiration. Please extend your appreciation for the job they have done, are doing, and will continue to do. 

I also recognize members of the Skidaway Island Emergency Action Team (EAT) for their teamwork and support throughout this ordeal. Your EAT met virtually several times throughout the last month. The EAT includes all stakeholders on Skidaway Island; all departments of The Landings Association (General Manager, Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Community Development, Public Works, Marinas, and Security); and various representatives from The Landings Club, The Landings Company, Utilities, Inc., Brightview, Comcast, Chatham Emergency Services, Skidaway Island First Responders, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Skidaway Island State Park, Institute of Oceanography, The Marshes, Thrive, Modena, South Harbor, The Village, residents of Green Island Road, all the churches, Kiwanis, and Publix. 

Hopefully, by the time you read this article, we will be on the downward side of the apex for confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths. Please continue to be cautious no matter where we are on the curve, and practice the guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Do not live in fear but be purposefully mindful of your daily actions and choices. You are the only person who indeed can be responsible for you. Although the statement is simple, it is incredibly profound when you consider all the ramifications it bears in your life. 

On a more somber note, around this time last year, we worked with various delivery drivers (UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.) as a few packages had been removed from people’s doorsteps. It appears our efforts had a positive effect, as the thefts declined and then dwindled to nothing. However, as I write this article, I am a realist and believe thefts more than likely will increase because of the effects COVID-19 has on our economy. Please help us make our community a “hardened target” and eliminate opportunities for crime and especially victim-assisted crimes. Secure your valuables by locking your cars and homes, document and record your valuables, review your insurance coverage, and report any suspicious activity to 912-598-1982, option 2, or option 3 if it is urgent. 

As my officers continue to increase their patrols and enforcement efforts, please be mindful of the community path rules, traffic laws, and general due regard for fellow travelers. We are starting to “boot” unregistered golf carts on TLA common property. If, by an unfortunate circumstance, you find a “boot” device on your unregistered golf cart, please call 912-598-1982, option 2. An officer will respond immediately (pending any medical or other calls for service) to assist with the removal, issuance of a fine (up to $30) and removal fee (up to $75), and procedures to get your cart registered. As a reminder, if you purchased your cart from another resident, you must have the registration transferred to you by completing a golf cart registration form online (landings.org/golf-cart-registration). 

During the past month, TLA staff have seen a few violations caused either by a lack of knowledge or a complete disregard for the Covenants and Rules & Regulations. In my opinion, there is no excuse for either reason. However, a majority of our residents shined throughout this ordeal, and for that, I thank you. Although we have been and continue to be struggling with hard times, remember that this too shall pass. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. Let’s start with today, and all strive to shine a little brighter!
