Did you know that Savannah was a Christmas present to President Abraham Lincoln from General William Tecumseh Sherman? During the Civil War, as Union soldiers were conquering the southern colonies, Sherman was wreaking havoc on every southern city he came across. After burning down Atlanta, it was Savannah’s turn to be destroyed. But as he entered Savannah, he was confronted with its beauty and decided to spare it. He gifted the city to President Lincoln for Christmas in 1864.
