Did you know that Groundhog Day has roots in both Christian and German traditions? However, the reason why the groundhog emerges in early February actually serves a purpose. Groundhogs hibernate from late fall through early spring, dropping their heartrates as low as five beats per minute during this time. In early February, the male groundhogs will emerge to look for a mate and then return to hibernation until March.
