How to Conserve Water Inside Your Home

We often think of water as a plentiful resource, but in fact it is far more precious than you may know! As water becomes scarce in certain parts of the country and world, it’s important that we be good stewards of this critical resource and do our part to conserve it! Implementing the practices below can help conserve upwards of 1,500 gallons of water a month!

In the Kitchen:

  • Don't leave the water running whenever you wash your dishes by hand or rinse them off after dinner. Turn the water off after use and avoid letting it run.
  • Make sure you don’t run the faucet while you clean fruits or vegetables. Try washing them in a sink or container filled with water.
  • Try to avoid defrosting frozen foods with running water. Defrost them in your refrigerator overnight or in the microwave.

In the Bathroom:

  • Frequently check your toilet for leaks and make sure your toilet is an ultra-low volume flush model. Make sure you download EyeOnWater to help with leak alerts if you haven’t done so already (https://eyeonwater.com/signin).
  • Make sure to turn off the water or faucet while brushing your teeth. Making this small change can save three gallons of water each day.
  • Don't use your toilet as a trashcan. When you do this, you are wasting gallons of water when you flush wipes, facial tissue, medication, or other small trash items down the toilet. This also causes potential damage to the Wastewater infrastructure. Place trash in a garbage bin as designed.

In the Laundry Room:

  • Only run your washing machine when you have a full load.
  • Allow stained clothes to soak in the sink in advance of washing them, so they don't have to be washed twice.
