Chatham Emergency Services Update

Have You Ever Dreamed of Being a Firefighter?

I am sure most little kids’ hearts beat faster when a fire engine goes racing past with its lights flashing and sirens blaring, and many want to be a firefighter when they grow up. I’m also sure that a lot of grownups will secretly admit that at some point in their childhood, they harbored that “firefighter” wish, as well.

If you were one of those little kids with that wish, I have good news. You can be a volunteer firefighter with Chatham Fire Department!

Skidaway Island Division is one of five divisions within Chatham Fire Department. All its volunteer firefighters are residents of Skidaway Island. As volunteer firefighters, we work alongside full-time, career firefighters to fight fires on the island, and on occasion elsewhere within unincorporated Chatham County. Like most Landings residents, the men and women of Skidaway Division hail from many states and occupations, but all are united in a desire to serve others.

When you see our chartreuse engines with flashing lights and sirens racing down the street and see firefighters at the scene of a fire, know that many of them are your neighbors. More importantly, know that you could be one of those firefighters.

We are looking for motivated, physically fit, and community-minded individuals to join our volunteer ranks. If you are looking to give back to your community in a significant way, becoming a volunteer firefighter might be the answer. No experience is required. We will provide all the training and equipment.

If you are interested in more information about becoming a volunteer firefighter, email me (cruppert@chathames.org).
