October TAG Program and Speaker Information

You are invited to a Telfair Academy Guild (TAG) program on October 11 at 10:30 a.m. in Jepson Center’s Neises Auditorium. (Masks are required inside the Neises Auditorium.) The coffee reception has been canceled for this month. Anne-Solene Bayan, Assistant Curator at Telfair Museums will present In the Shadows, Exploring the Art of the Silhouette through Works in the Telfair Museums.

Originally produced as profiles cut from black cloth or paper, silhouettes were popular in Europe and the United States in the 19th century as a means of rapidly capturing a likeness. Although photography has replaced the “shadow profile” for this purpose, artists have frequently turned to using the silhouette in new ways. Bayan will trace themes she found while selecting the works. She also will introduce us to recent Telfair Museums acquisitions -- a Porgy and Bess libretto and lithographs by Karen Walker, inspired by Gershwin’s opera.

Bayan joined the Telfair staff in April 2020 and supports the curatorial staff in all phases of exhibition development. She has worked on Vehicles of Change and Curators’ Choice as well as taking In the Shadows from idea to finished product. She studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and a Masters of Arts in Art History from the Williams College/Clark Art Institute joint program with a focus on 19th and early 20th century European and American art.

Members and guests are welcomed to attend. Non-members wishing to attend, please contact Viki Annand (vikiannand850@gmail.com or 912-330-7352).
