You Helped Us Make It Happen...One Year Later Ā

Last year on Memorial Day 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had us all in a funk. The Kiwanis Club of Skidaway found the silver lining in the pandemic with the Kiwanis Show Our Colors Flag Program. This fundraiser encouraged members who were isolated from golf, tennis, and other group activities to help design, develop, and produce a new display and flag set for the Flag Program. The striking new display sparked the interest of many new supporters.Ā

In the year since then, Kiwanis has almost doubled the number of supporters to the program, bringing the total to nearly 1,000. Show Our Colors now is represented in every neighborhood on Skidaway Island, including Modena, Thrive, and South Harbor, all added in the past 12 months. If you were here for Presidentsā€™ Day this past February, you noticed the entire island festooned with red, white, and blue.Ā

This increase in subscriptions allowed Kiwanis to award 10 grants, totaling $65,000, to 10 organizations that help support at-risk children in Savannah/Chatham County. Show Our Colors provided more than half of the grant money. Awards went to Americaā€™s Second Harvest, Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club, The L.O.V.E. Program (Local Outreach Volunteer Educators), Horizons Savannah (The Country Day School), Union Mission, Park Place Outreach, Xcel Strategies, Performance Initiatives, The Mediation Center for the Coastal Empire, and Coastal Childrenā€™s Advocacy Center. This is how charity and patriotism work together to make a better life for our at-risk children in Savannah and Chatham County.Ā

Hereā€™s how the program works. You make an annual donation of $50. For your donation, a team of Kiwanis flag setters place a base and two flags in the yards of supporters for four holidays per year -- Presidentsā€™ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. Flags are placed in yards two-to-three days prior to each holiday and removed a day or two afterwards, cleaned, and stored until the next holiday. Even if you are on vacation or are only on the island part-time, your yard will have flags throughout the year. If you already have a large flag, call us to learn how you can support the program in the memory of a veteran, while at the same time helping at-risk children.Ā

On May 2, 2021, the Kiwanis Club of Skidaway is introduced some exciting upgrades to the Program! There will be a special Kiwanis Flag Hotline phone number (912-388-6070) that you may call to order flags and ask questions. This number will appear on all new forms and on the Kiwanis banners in The Village. At the same time, Kiwanis will introduce an updated Kiwanis Club website (www.kiwanisofskidaway.com) that will include a new Kiwanis Flag Form. You now will be able to order or renew your subscription online, and credit cards will be accepted for payment. If you do not want to use your credit card, donations of $50, payable toĀ Kiwanis Club of Skidaway, may be sent to Bill and Chris Aiken Sickels (147 Saltwater Way, Savannah, GA 31411. Further details were recently emailed to current supporters.Ā

This Memorial Day, once again we can grill a hotdog, spend time with friends, and remember those who gave so much for our freedoms. What better way to celebrate our American Veterans than by becoming a Show Our Colors supporter? The Kiwanis Club of Skidaway wishes everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day!
